They say we should be kind and empathetic to others as we get what we give. We all go along with our lives with that philosophy in our minds, hearts, and souls, but the reality is far from it. People do as they please while being inconsiderate of the feelings of others as long as their end justifies the means. Yet, karma seems to act swiftly only for a few unlucky individuals, punishing them the moment they step out of line. We have all seen this play in movies, TV shows, folk stories, and more, where good deeds get rewarded and bad deeds get punished. E.g., In ‘The Lion King’, Scar’s betrayal leads to his downfall or in ‘A Christmas Carol’, Scrooge faces immediate consequences for his greed and cruelty.
Let’s dive deeper into the philosophical or cultural roots of karma:
- Hinduism: Karma spans lifetimes, influencing reincarnation.
- Buddhism: Karma shapes our present and future based on the intentions behind actions.
- Christianity: No teachings of karma but focuses more on God’s justice, mercy, and the importance of forgiveness.
- Islam: No teachings of karma but emphasizes repentance and Allah’s mercy, and consequences are often deferred until the afterlife.
- Judaism: No concept of karma, but reflects that good deeds are rewarded and wrongdoings are punished, but this is understood as God’s justice.
- Sikhism: Acknowledges karma, where actions (good or bad) directly affect one’s future. The emphasis is on spiritual liberation (Mukti) through God’s grace, which can erase the effects of past karma.
So, the question remains, why in movies do people get their karma faster than in real life, does it have to do with the fact that the karma level differs from person to person or something else? Let’s ponder on the reasons:
- Balance: It is often said that the universe strives for balance between good and evil to maintain harmony. When someone with a history of good deeds begins to tread on bad intentions, karma acts swiftly to restore equilibrium. This instant payback is a reminder that our actions, good or bad, ripple far beyond the immediate moment.
- Luck Factor: Some people are just not as sleek as they think and when they step off to do something back they get their instant karma since they are not lucky enough to pull off something that will benefit them while harming others.
- Jinx: It is said when someone’s heart gets hurt, their pain becomes so unbearable that it curses the person who made them feel so, and thus they are jinxed for life until they feel remorseful or are forgiven.
- No shortcuts for hard-workers: There are some people out there who are not cruel enough to use their vile aspects to get what they want. They are the ones who have achieved everything in life with hard work and skill, but when they try to get things in life through shortcuts they fail miserably since it’s not the way they have been earning things in life.
- Firm believers in Karma: Some people know the right from the wrong and thus, are scared that when they do someone wrong they will get their instant karma in no time. They are scared of the consequences of their bad actions and therefore, they steer clear of the sinful path.
When we act with kindness, we tend to attract kindness, creating a ripple effect of positivity. Do you believe karma is selective, or does it eventually catch up with everyone? Share your thoughts!
