Green Fungus – Symptoms and Prevention, All you need to Know

The timeline of COVID-19 variants doesn’t seem to stop. The same cases are with the COVID-19 infections, first, we recorded cases of Black Fungus (Mucormycosis), then White Fungus (Candida) and Yellow Fungus (Aspergillosis). And now joining the trio, the Green fungus first case has been registered in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The case came to light after a patient went for black fungus or mucormycosis tests. The 34-year-old was flown to Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital by air ambulance after recovering from Covid-19. For the past month and a half, the guy has been receiving treatment at Indore’s Aurobindo Hospital.

What is Green Fungus (Aspergillosis Infection)?

Green fungus is an uncommon infection caused by Aspergillus species, which are widely occurring fungi. It may be found indoors and out, and most individuals inhale Aspergillus spores daily.

Causes Green Fungus:

  • Simply inhaling tiny spores of the aspergillus fungus can cause it. While the immune system normally inhibits the growth of any spores within the body, in some situations the immune system is unable to inhibit the growth of the spores.
  • Those with weakened immune systems, as well as those recuperating from or suffering from lung illnesses, are more vulnerable.

Factors causing Green Fungus:

  • Lung damage
  • Misuse of steroids
  • A compromised immune system
  • Poor infection control in overburdened hospitals

Note: Fungal infections are not contagious, meaning they cannot be passed from one person to the next or between humans and animals.

Symptoms of Green Fungus:

  • Chest Pain
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath/ Breathlessness

Prevention of Green Fungus:

  • Maintain Good Hygiene, both Oral and Physical.
  • Avoid locations where there is a lot of dust or polluted water that has been kept.
  • If you can’t avoid these places, protect yourself by using an N95 respirator.
  • Avoid activities that need you to be near soil or dust.
  • If your face or hands have been exposed to filth or dust, keep cleaning them with soap and water.

These are challenging times and we need to be vigilant and careful. The careless way will only bring more pain, suffering and maybe another coloured-fungus infection.
